External thermal insulation

external thermal insulation wall

An External thermal insulation, also known as jacket insulation, is one of the most effective systems for improving a building’s energy performances.
It consists of a series of layers of insulation applied to the outside of the building, which provide it with complete thermal and acoustic insulation.

THE BENEFITS OF AN EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION

  • Excellent thermal insulation
  • Insulation against heat and cold
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Better soundproofing
  • Protection of external walls against damage
  • Significant reduction in cold bridges
  • Increase in value of property
  • Improvement of building’s energy class

External thermal insulation is ideal for both small buildings and the facades of apartment blocks or tall buildings.

KTI: THE DEFINITIVE SOLUTION BY KRONOS CERAMICHE

The Kronos Thermal Insulation (KTI) panel is a system for cladding the exteriors of buildings which provides both a stoneware finish and insulation of the building (EPS), in one, easily installed solution.

BENEFITS OF KTI SYSTEM

By combining the quality of porcelain stoneware with an innovative application system, this system guarantees high performances, unbeatable versatility and total creative freedom.
It is an ideal product that guarantees rapid installation in complete safety (Kerf hook) and a long building life cycle.
Ideal both for renovation projects and for new buildings of considerable height.

THERMAL INSULATION

The standard thickness of 12 cm of EPS guarantees excellent thermal insulation. EPS thicknesses from 8 to 16 cm are available.

SOUNDPROOFING

The compact external layer of porcelain stoneware helps to create a barrier against outside noise.

SAFETY

KTI can be installed even on very tall facades because as well as the adhesive which holds the two layers (EPS and stoneware) firmly together and the mortar that bonds KTI to the wall, special safety fixtures are also provided on every panel.

IMPACT RESISTANCE

Extremely hard, stoneware protects the facade against bad weather or occasional impacts.

APPEARANCE

Any type of material can be used.

QUICK, EASY INSTALLATION

The panel is ready to use and only has to be applied with the mortar and the recommended expansion plugs, after which the joints are grouted. It is all done on the same day and by the same installation team.

ZERO MAINTENANCE

There will be no need for expensive, complicated maintenance work; stoneware maintains its appearance unchanged over time.

INSTALLATION ADVICE

kti installation

Check the flatness of the wall with a 2.5 m straightedge and spirit level. In case of significant unevenness, preliminary levelling is advisable. If the underlying wall is plastered, check that the surface is not loose and remove any parts in poor condition.

Fix the first profile with flat-head expansion plugs. It must be perfectly level. The profile should be kept at least 5 cm above the ground.

Stir the recommended adhesive mortar, Mapei Keraquik Maxi (instructions on pack) or equivalent thoroughly.

Apply the adhesive mortar to the underside of the KTI panel using a 10 mm notched trowel, working so that the lines left by the trowel are parallel to the long side of the panel. If the substrate surface is uneven, apply the adhesive in knobs on the edges and in the middle.

Fix the KTI panel using the expansion plugs F. Check that it is level.

Place the levelling devices D in the most suitable points between the ceramic surface and the EPS. Once at least four panels have been installed, start tightening the tie-bolts D2 on the levelling devices D so that the entire covering is perfectly flat.

After completing installation, wait 48 hours then unscrew the tie-bolts D2 and break the legs of the levelling devices D by tapping with a rubber hammer, or half-unscrew the tie-bolt D2 and press by hand.

Grout the joints and proceed with final cleaning. Recommended grout is FillGood by Litokol (instructions on pack). If holes have to be made in the panel after installation, do not use a hammer drill and utilise the appropriate water-cooled core bits. Keep the bit at a slight angle when starting the hole.

To fix gutters or other items, use an expansion plug for loads at a distance from the surface and/or insert a narrow rigid tube in the jacket to ensure that the fastening screw does not apply excessive force to the ceramic surface.

To construct external corners with the KTI panel, remove the surplus EPS, apply masking tape to the ceramic edges to be joined and seal with silicone sealant.
